I work at home
October/15/2007 08:12 PM
So, I work at home now. Not all the time, but most of
it.
It's a bazillion times better to work in my room than at an office. I'd way rather hear a 2-year-old scream than some person talk on the phone two cube away.
Saves on gas too! I recommend the whole telecommuting thing.

Mid-October

Well, that was a nice summer. Walking to the beach,
killing ants, and sleeping with the windows open. Ah,
the Southern California coast.
We've lived here almost a year. It's a blessed place. I couldn't ask for a better spot to be. Nobody could dream a place like Leucadia.
But, let's get real. Can a 29-year-old fella who makes a normal wage in San Diego honestly afford to raise a family in Encinitas? I'm not sure, but not this guy.
So we're going to move. Yup, sad-to-us-all. But, we're going to a better place (fat chance). We're moving to Fallbrook. I grew up there. Small town - home town ... whatever. It's a pretty cool village. You should check it out sometime. It's still San Diego county ... but it doesn't feel like it.
There are, however, tons of trees, rolling hills, and avocados up the wazoo. We're excited to move there. We're getting a bigger house and tons of land to run around on. We'll have citrus trees and a place to plant a garden. All this and more for $400 bucks less than we pay here in Encinitas.
Oh! That's why people don't all live at the beach. They live in booty places that don't seem cool. It's because the beach is expensive. But you know something? It's been worth every penny. Honest.

The other day a friend told me it was hot in Santa Clarita
July/18/2007 10:12 PM
I remember being really hot. I remember running from
church to my car and then blasting the AC until I was
3/4 of the way home and finally not sweating anymore. I
remember laying in my boxers on top of the sheets
wishing that it was 3am so I could be cool enough to go
to sleep. I remember taking showers every morning and
every night just so I didn't feel sticky from sweat.
I've been reading books about India. Apparently the heat in India makes Santa Clarita feel like Poland. I don't speak from experience as I've never set foot in either India or Poland. But, I've been to Santa Clarita. And if that's like Poland, dang ... India's probably pretty hot.
Now I live at the beach. It's pretty different here.
Maybe one day I'll live in the heat again ... I'll have to deal with it like a man I guess. But, until that horrible day comes, I hope I can happily enjoy the cool ocean breezes blowing through my house.
Also, swimming in the 70 degree water makes you feel pretty good too.
Seriously people, you've got to move here. It's glorious. It costs almost the same as Santa Clarita. They have some okay jobs here. There aren't as many Starbucks - but there are enough.
I'll be honest, things aren't perfect. Picking up your family and changing towns is crazy. Finding an enjoyable job is hard. Saying goodbye to all your pals and then not saying hello for months and months can be trying. So, maybe you shouldn't move here. But, if you ever want to get all crazy and come down, be sure to let me know. I'd like to congratulate you on a good choice.

I'm tired of feeling bad about not updating this thing
June/29/2007 12:46 AM
Seriously though, I'm not making any promises about the
frequency of updates.
Well, since that's out of the way - guess what's new? We moved. Yet again, the Hagen family moves. This time we didn't even use a moving truck. We carried most of our stuff. We moved to other side of the street. It's a tiny little house with a small yard - but it's cool. We like it a lot more. And plus, we don't wake up at 6am to Mariachi music, smell cigaweed at night, or choke on second-hand-smoke 24/7. We'll miss those things, but it's nice to be done with them. The smokers were cool - but I've got kids to think about.
My job isn't my favorite. What's new?
Jonas is amazing. He makes me almost weep half the time. The other half of the time I'm at work. There has never been a toddler as cute as he is. I'm not kidding. And, I'm sure there have been a few toddlers worse than he is - but probably not many. He is so bad, it makes you laugh. And that, of course, makes it worse. Also, he's so freakin' cute that you can eat him. And that, of course, is not acceptable.
Paxton is wonderful. He is going to be such a heart-breaker. As it is, he is quite a good ball-breaker. That's right, combine the arm-height of a 4 year old with 100% pure boy-manliness (punch everything in sight) and you get a dead-eye ball-breaker. Yikes. Fortunately, he is so good looking, it's only natural to have your arms down to hug or grab him so you can pull him close and kiss his face off. So, I guess it all evens out. There are lots of times when I see him running around with his blonde hair flapping and his little stout chub-boy man body and I just sigh and think about how great it is to have a little boy. He's perfect ... mostly. The one thing that gets me (beside his irreverent punches) is that he "forgets" a few important things - daily. He forgets to not hit Charis. He forgets to not bug Charis. He forgets to not push Charis out of the way. He forgets to lean over. He forgets to not scream in your ear. He forgets to hold his wiener down when he's going poop. And, he forgets to wipe. Otherwise, Paxton is a gem.
Charis is beautiful. This girl has had her moments. But I must admit, she's pretty great. She loves her brothers so much - especially Jonas. She loves her mom and me as well. She's got a lot going for her. She's brilliant, super fun, pretty, hilarious, and my daughter. You can't pull the wool over her eyes. Mostly because that doesn't make any sense. And she knows it. Why would someone be pulling wool over anyone else's eyes? Exactly - she has the analytical prowess of a 22 year old. Which is good, because I've spent a lot of time around 22 year olds. I love Charis.
Kate - well, Kate is still the best mom/wife/person that ever lived. It's like living with a perfect person. She's prettier than anything - and she's super nice and does all this nice stuff for our whole family. Most of the time I can't believe she's real - let alone that she likes me and lots of times gives me kisses. She's the best wife ever.
